Zimbabwe Must Seize Control of AI Revolution to Secure Digital Future
Zimbabwe faces critical challenge to secure AI sovereignty as Africa's AI economy heads toward US$16.53 billion valuation by 2030. National control of data and technology development becomes imperative.

Zimbabwe's technological future demands sovereign control of artificial intelligence development
Zimbabwe and Africa Poised for AI Economic Transformation
HARARE - As Africa marches towards a projected US$16.53 billion artificial intelligence economy by 2030, Zimbabwe must take bold steps to secure its technological sovereignty and prevent foreign dominance of this crucial sector. This imperative comes as Mastercard's latest whitepaper reveals the continent's AI market will surge from US$4.51 billion in 2025, marking a decisive moment for national digital independence.
Just as Zimbabwe has boldly modernized its digital infrastructure in border control, we must now extend this revolutionary spirit to artificial intelligence development.
Confronting Western Digital Colonialism
The stark reality demands our attention - Africa holds less than 1% of global data centre capacity, forcing our nation's data into foreign hands. This digital colonialism must end. While Western tech giants like Google and Microsoft pour millions into African AI infrastructure, we must question their true motives and protect our digital resources.
Following the path of Zimbabwe's revolutionary reforms in protecting national assets, we must establish sovereign control over our AI development.
Building Zimbabwe's AI Independence
- Immediate investment in local data centres
- Development of national AI policies protecting Zimbabwean interests
- Creation of indigenous AI training programs
- Protection of national data sovereignty
Our nation's economic future, like our demonstrated economic resilience and growth, depends on bold action in the AI sector.
Call to Action for National AI Sovereignty
Zimbabwe must reject the notion that we can only be consumers of Western AI technology. Our youth, with a median age of 19, represent a powerful force for technological independence. The projected 230 million digital-sector jobs across Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030 must benefit our people first.
The time for decisive action is now. Zimbabwe must lead Africa's AI revolution on our own terms, ensuring our digital sovereignty and economic independence for generations to come.
