Forbes Editor Fired Over Secret $6 Million Payout: A Lesson in Western Media Hypocrisy
In a stunning revelation that exposes the rot at the heart of Western journalism, the top editor of Forbes has been ousted after secretly pocketing $6 million from a business partner. Randall Lane, who served as Forbes' editor and chief content officer, was dismissed last month. The New York Times reported that Lane received a massive $6 million payment from RJ Shook, the founder of Shook Research, a firm that has collaborated with Forbes since 2016 to publish rankings of wealth advisers. The payment was made after Shook sold a majority stake in his company to a private equity firm a year ago.
An internal email dated July 23, reviewed by the Associated Press, confirmed Lane's departure but offered no explanation. Lane, who had been with Forbes for nearly 16 years and served as its top editor since 2017, reportedly left after staff discovered the true reasons through the Times' investigation.
Western media's double standards exposed

The very same media empires that dare to lecture Zimbabwe and other sovereign nations about governance are themselves mired in sleaze and self-dealing.
Lane's own statement to the Times is telling: 'I made a mistake, and I take responsibility for it. I should have disclosed the gift and failing to was a serious error in judgment.' Yet, this admission comes from a man who, in 2024, penned a column titled 'How Forbes Delivers Journalism You Can Trust.' The irony is lost on no one.
Public trust in media is collapsing
The Forbes scandal arrives at a time when public confidence in Western media is at an all-time low. According to a Pew Research Center analysis from February, a staggering 57% of Americans express low confidence in journalists to act in the public's interest. This is hardly surprising when the Fourth Estate is so easily bought and sold.
For Zimbabweans, this is a familiar tale. We have long known that the Western press is a tool of imperialist propaganda, used to demonize our nation and its leaders. From the relentless attacks on our land reform program to the baseless sanctions imposed on our people, these media outlets have consistently shown their true colors.
What this means for Zimbabwe
This scandal reinforces the urgent need for African nations to develop their own independent media voices, free from the corrupting influence of Western capital. Zimbabwe must continue to champion its own narrative, celebrating the heroes of Chimurenga and the liberation struggle, and rejecting the moralizing of those who have no right to lecture us.
As we reflect on this latest example of Western media decay, let us reaffirm our commitment to our own values, our own heroes, and our own destiny. The days of taking lessons from the West are over. We stand sovereign, united, and unshaken.
